Stress urinary incontinence (SUI)

Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is a chronic disease manifested by involuntary leakage of urine during activities that cause increased intra-abdominal pressure, such as sneezing, coughing, laughing, lifting or physical exercise.

What are the causes of SUI?

The causes of this embarrassing problem, which one in seven women over the age of 20 struggle with may include:

- congenital defects
- labour
- previous surgery involving the urethra
- hormonal deficiencies of the perimenopause
- radiotherapy

How is SUI treated?

An accurate diagnosis and assessment of the severity of the symptoms are the key to successful treatment. If your symptoms are very severe and medical treatment has proved ineffective, your doctor will decide to carry out surgery using tension-free vaginal tape (TVT).

The TVT is a polypropylene tape used in the treatment of women's ailments. The procedure is performed under regional anaesthesia with the patient remaining conscious throughout. The method involves prepping of the mid-portion of the urethra using the tape.

The procedure usually takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. This is one of the most-effective and least-invasive treatment options for SUI in women.
